SUMMARY:Training for mentoring children to read 12:00-1:30
DESCRIPTION:Good morning! Hope everyone is having a fun and pleasant summer! \nHere is some information on an amazing opportunity we have before us to advance the lives of third graders in Norfolk at the Richard Bowling Elementary School. The school is located in the 23504 zip code- the #8 zip code in the US by the rate of incarceration. \nWhat: tutor reading for 2019-2020 academic year at Richard Bowling Elementary School\, once a week for 1 hour. \nWhen: tutor and substitute tutor training will take place at the Women’s Club on September 10\, at 11:30am. Lunch will be provided. \nHow: we will be tutoring a group of third grade minority children who had fallen behind in reading\, and statistically if they do not catch up in 3d grade\, 8 out of 10 of them never will. Illiteracy is DIRECTLY linked to inability to graduate from high school\, inability to hold a job\, and eventually- incarceration. \nBy tutoring these kids we are giving them a leg up in life. Unfortunately most of them haven’t had many opportunities to have one of one tutoring. Most of their parents are working minimal paying jobs\, often 2-3 jobs\, some of the parents are incarcerated; and kids are left unattended for hours after school with no help with homework. \nBONUS: we are actually making a documentary film about this – and Norfolk Police Department will be tutoring at the school alongside the Women’s Club of Norfolk. \nDOUBLE BONUS: most likely we will have the opportunity to bless these children at Thanksgiving and Christmas\, working with a charity that operates in the school. \nPlease reply to this email if you would like to sign up for training- or if you have any questions please contact Masha at maria.peek23@gmail.com. You must attend training in order to tutor in the school- this is a mandatory requirement. \nWe will select the best day/time for tutoring based on everyone’s schedule . It will be the same set day/time throughout 2019/2020 academic year. \nHope to hear from you soon! \nMaria Peek (Masha) \nEducation Chair \n— \nMaria Peek \nProducer/Director  \nAURORIS MEDIA | www.auroris.tv \n757.580-2383 \n
